HIV-1 is referred to a 'wild genotype' and first-level ARTs respond very well in medication naive patients. HIV-2 is a genotype in which first-level ARTs do not respond very well in medication naive patients and more aggressive combinations of antiviral therapy. ART = Anti-Retroviral Therapy. Medication Naive = someone in whom the virus is not resistant to the ART medication.
