If I have had sex with someone who is HIV positive, how long might it be before I should get tested, i.e. how soon could it be detected? Secondly how long afterward do I need to continue to get tested before I can be sure I was not infected?
Hello. That depends on what test you use.you could use a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test from 10 days post exposure,it would be a good indicator but NOT conclusive.the best test would be a HIV duo Test from 28 days post exposure, this test looks for the virus itself and early antibody's and would be conclusive at 28 days. Then of course you have the Antibody test(finger prick test)which some clinics say is conclusive from 6 weeks post exposure.(some clinics still go by 3 months to legally exclude HIV)These are UK guidelines.
