I have just been told I am positive. What happens now? What will this stop me doing?
I am terrified and thw doctor I saw wasn't very good or supportive I felt like she judged me. So now I have no idea what happens next or what to expect. Will this turn to aids? Will I die? Am I going to be ill forever? Will people know? And what treatment options do I have?
Only tell someone that your planning on having sex with and only family or friends you truly trust first of all. I was diagnosed four years ago at 18 I thought the same thing you did I cried I was depressed but then I looked up information for myself talked with my dr and honestly if you take your medications and keep up with you lab work you will be just fine I am 4 years in this and I am doing just fine the medication keeps the virus so low it could never progress to aids if you take it correctly. There will be times where you feels like crap or are upset but this isnt a death sentance like it used to be. You need to get connected with an hiv care cordinator to get you started with insurance and all that good stuff took me about six months to get it but the program paid for my first labs dr visits all that while waiting for insurance if you keep healthy take vitamins excise and keep up with your health you can live a normal life. The hiv you will have forever until they find a way to cure or eradicate a virus. Until then you have it in your body. The only people who will know is the ones you chose to tell there is not anyway for them to find it out. Just be careful whom you share with people can be judgemental and it sucks but thats the way the world works. From here on out you need to make your life what you want it to be and be happy because if you let this bring you down it was very hard for me to come back out of this fog of depression. There is always someone to talk to or help you. Find a dr. and someone you can trust to talk about whats going on. Be honest to you will be just fine just a few minor adjustments/lifestyle changes. If you left the infection untreated with no medication or anything and let it run its course it takes an average of 10 years for it to progress to aids and eventually death, but with HAART treatment or hiv medication treatment you can live pretty much a full normal life just like everyone else.
